Borovan Municipality
Borovan Municipality is situated in the north-western part of the Republic of Bulgaria, in the valley of the Danube Plain.
The area of Borovan was inhabited during the stone-copper age (5000 BC). There are two settlements of this period known in the countryside of “Lapchovets” and “Ezeroto”, where flint and stone tools with various shapes and rich decorations were found. Traces of the Bronze Age are found in the area of Vaskov Chukar It was found that in the 1st millennium BC there were two Thracian settlements and two Thracian tomb necropolises in the area of Borovan, respectively in the "Ezeroto" and "Tieev Lag" areas. Thracian equipment and iron bridles dating back to the 2nd century BC were found.
Today, the village of Borovan lies on the remains of a large Thracian-Roman settlement, as evidenced by the open tombs (I-IV century), pottery and Roman coins. At the height of the Borovan Mound are preserved some of the foundations of the walls and towers of the late Roman fortress. Remnants of a medieval Bulgarian settlement were also found.
The name Borovan dates back to the Bulgarian Middle Ages. In a document of 1614 (Timar register) a list of 325 inhabitants of the Borovan village was found, including 5 priests, probably there was a church and a church school for the preparation of priests and teachers at that time. In 1820 one of the first secular schools in Vratsa was opened in Borovan. In 1834 the locals built a wooden church called "St. Paraskeva" and in 1843, one made of stone. The church of St. Nicholas was built in 1872 and a century later it was declared a monument of culture.
