Constanta is the oldest city in Romania, founded around 600 BC, and is situated on the west coast of the Black Sea. It is the largest port in Romania and the fourth in Europe. The original city was named Tomis, founded by Greek colonists, then conquered by the Romans, and the Roman emperor Constantine the Great changed his name to Constantiana. In the nineteenth century, refined buildings and hotels were built when King Carol I decided to revive the city as a port and spa resort with a 13 km long beach length. Constanta is today an important cultural and economic center, worth visiting for its commercial architecture. Its historical monuments, ancient ruins, museums and spa resorts make Constanta a major tourist center on the Black Sea coast.
