    Giurgiu County

Giurgiu County is located in the southern part of Romania, on the lower course of the Danube. The location on the bank of the Danube along 72 km gives the county the possibility to have river connections with the riparian countries and the Black Sea. The county's residence is the city of Giurgiu, 64 km from the capital of the country, on the Bucharest - Sofia - Athens or Bucharest - Istanbul routes.

Documentary attested from the 14th century, Giurgiu was the host of technical prizes: the first railway line in Romania (Bucharest - Giurgiu), the first telegraph line and the bridge over the Danube. Giurgiu is an important border crossing point for goods and passengers traffic. Giurgiu is one of the most important Romanian ports on the Danube. In the north of the county are exploited oil deposits, and from the Danube and rivers passes through the county are extracted sands and gravel. Belonging to the Romanian Plain, the area of the county is made up of forests and arable land. Giurgiu County comprises a municipality, two cities, 51 communes and 167 villages. The population of Giurgiu County represents 1.3% of Romania's population. Giurgiu's economy is distinguished as activities with significant weight, agriculture, industry and commerce. Representatives of the county are: the food and beverage industry, oil and gas extraction, textiles and textiles. In the county there are two industrial parks - Giurgiu Nord Industrial and Industrial Park and Bolintin-Deal Industrial Park, but the county economy still does not offer all the conditions to attract a large number of investments, however, opening the county to major road, rail and naval roads , are key arguments for developing this potential. Port Giurgiu and Free Zone can provide an easy and varied economic transit of goods crossing the commercial corridor in southern Romania. Most SMEs are active in commerce, light industry, construction, transport. Giurgiu County is still a predominantly agricultural county, with nearly 50% of the population employed in this sector. Since more than half of the population is active in subsistence agriculture, measures are needed to make agriculture more efficient. The road transport, the first connection with the city of Bucharest and the rest of the country, has an express road and national roads in the majority with acceptable road conditions. Giurgiu port can become a variant for freight transport from Constanta port, on a possible route Constanta - Giurgiu - Bucharest. This exit to the Danube is an important geostrategic point for Romania, making this point one of the main links of Western Europe with the Near East, this aspect revealing the high potential for development of Giurgiu County. Giurgiu County benefits from the presence of many tourist attractions on its territory. Regarding the number of arrivals of tourists, the county records a small number, compensated by the fact that a large part of them are foreign tourists. An important resource for tourism is the existence of a large number of motorbike accommodations. Giurgiu Municipality is an important Danube port along the Danube-Danube-Danube Canal Rinn-Mein Dunau. It is tied in the river by nine countries, as well as the Black Sea and the North Sea. The pan-European rail network, which starts from Ostende (Belgium), passes through Berlin, Prague, Budapest, Bucharest, Giurgiu, Ruse, Sofia, Istanbul and via Thessaloniki connects with Athens. Between Giurgiu and Ruse is the only bridge over the Danube between Romania and Bulgaria, which was built between 1952 and 1954 and was symbolically called "Friendship Bridge". Among the interesting sights of Giurgiu city can be mentioned the ruins of the old medieval fortress, the History Museum, the Clock Tower, the monuments dedicated to the War of Independence heroes and the French soldiers fallen to Giurgiu in the First World War, the Cathedral of the Assumption, "Ascension of the Lord" and "Buna Vestire" Church, where the original interior painting by Gheorghe Tătărăscu is preserved. In Giurgiu County there is a very attractive area within the commune of Comana. The Reserve in the Comana Forest is a monument of nature, a paradise of the fauna and flora specific to the Danube Plain. The uniqueness of the reservation is due to the existence of the Romanian peony, in May the "Peony holiday" was held here. The most important monument in this area is the Comana Monastery, founded by the prince Vlad Tepes.

In Călugăreni, a historical locality whose name has far exceeded the borders of the country, one can visit the cross of Mihai, a monument built in 1993 on the occasion of 400 years since the arrival of Mihai Viteazul on the throne of Walachia. All of these landmarks remind us of the past of these lands as a testimony of our evolution and continuity in this space.
