Montana Municipality
Montana Municipality is located in Northwestern Bulgaria. It is the largest municipality in the area, both by area and by population.
The town of Montana, a regional center in the Republic of Bulgaria, has an ancient history. The modern city bears the name of the Roman city of Montana, within the province of Dolna Mizia, which flourishes on the banks of the Ogosta river in the 2nd-4th centuries AD. The written sources for the history of this settlement are the epic monuments of the Roman era found in Montana and the area.
Traces of settlement life in the area date back to prehistoric times. In the lowest cultural layers of the Montana fortress, on the Kaleto hill there are traces of houses of the stone-copper age (V-IV millennium BC). In the first millenium BC these lands were inhabited by the Thracian tribal tribe. The remains of a pre-Roman fortress wall below the level of the big fortress tower have a preserved thickness of more than 1 meter.
Since 1993, the town of Montana, a regional center in the Republic of Bulgaria, bears its first historically known name - of the ancient settlement of the Roman era Montana, an inseparable part of the modern history and cultural tradition of today's city.
