On the territory of the city, the archaeological discoveries have revealed ceramics belonging to the renowned Cofofeni culture of the Bronze Age, as well as the Treasure of Filiaşi, which contains the Friesach dinars and Corinthia from the 13th century. The first mention of the name of the locality dates back to January 1, 1573.
An important family of boyars, named Philişanu, left his mark on the history of the city for 400 years.
In 1906 Dimitrie Philişanul, the one by which the last descendant of the boyars was exorcised, stands for a splendid edifice that will remain under the name of "Philişan Chapel".
The concerns of the Filistani boyars did not materialize only on the spiritual level, but also in the social field, proving their concern for the poor people, their foundations being largely destined for them. Of these, the most important is the Hospital of Phillips and two water cisterns, one in the Balta village, and one in Filiaşi, located at "Hanul Mare".
In 1935 the teacher Nicolae Mitea gives life to another reference building in the history of the city: the People's Library, now the "Anton Pann" Town Library.
